Concrete Words Exercise

The following is an exercise whereby I chose an abstract word (for instance, the first line is for the word “beauty”) and created a concrete image.

A mayfly’s honey-dew flight with the rising sun

The stillness around him echoed with silence

The bird flew on a flute’s falsetto

Thornless stems remained from a stripped rose

A magnet encased by two feet of rubber lies in a sea of nails

Her smile was a hotel for tiny alabaster teeth

He was carving wrinkles in his skin with a spoon, as if he were made of clay

The pine was crowned with nests, while the birch lay barren

Pipe-smoke enveloped me like a blanket of toasted lilacs
